Working Principle

Instrument fittings consist of two ferrules that reinforce a shaft or bind materials together. They provide a torque-free seal and prevent leaks at tube connections. Instrumentation fittings operate on the principle of creating secure, leak-proof connections through precise mechanical compression or welding techniques. In the case of double ferrule fittings, when tightened, the rear ferrule provides the necessary gripping force, anchoring the tube firmly, while the front ferrule simultaneously forms a tight seal against the fitting body.

instrumentation fitting working principle
Components

Precision-machined from solid bar stock with carefully designed internal geometry

Creates primary seal against fitting body and tube surface

Provides tube grip and reinforces front ferrule seal (in double ferrule designs)

Drives ferrules forward and maintains consistent sealing pressure

Sealing Mechanism

The tube is inserted into the fitting body until it bottoms out against the internal shoulder. The nut is then hand-tightened, bringing the ferrules into contact with the fitting body.

As the nut is tightened, the front ferrule creates a seal against both the fitting body and the tube surface. In double ferrule designs, the back ferrule drives the front ferrule forward while gripping the tube.

When properly tightened (typically 1¼ turns from finger-tight), the ferrules create a gas-tight seal and secure mechanical grip on the tube, preventing both leakage and tube pull-out.

Under pressure, the sealing forces actually increase as the system pressure pushes against the ferrule geometry, creating an even tighter seal – a principle known as "pressure-assisted sealing."

Installation Tips

Material Overview

Our instrumentation fittings are trusted in the most demanding industries worldwide, delivering reliable performance in critical systems.

ss instrumentation fitting

316 Stainless Steel

316 stainless steel is the industry standard for high-performance environments due to its excellent resistance to corrosion, high temperatures, and high pressures. It is ideal for offshore oil and gas, petrochemical, and food-grade applications where long-term reliability and sanitation are critical. Its chromium, nickel, and molybdenum composition offers enhanced pitting resistance in aggressive environments such as chlorides and marine atmospheres.

brass instrumentation fitting

Brass

Brass is a versatile and cost-effective material that offers good corrosion resistance and machinability, making it suitable for low to medium pressure applications. It is widely used in general-purpose water, air, and non-corrosive fluid systems. Its ease of installation and affordability make it a popular choice for commercial and residential instrumentation setups.

carbon steel instrumentation fitting

Carbon Steel

Carbon steel fittings are known for their high mechanical strength and toughness, making them suitable for heavy-duty applications in standard industrial environments. While less resistant to corrosion than stainless steel, they are typically coated or treated to withstand moderate environmental exposure. Carbon steel is often used in hydraulic systems, manufacturing plants, and construction machinery where durability and structural integrity are essential.
