What is a universal hose coupling?
A universal air hose fitting, also called a claw coupling, uses two opposing claws and a compressible gasket to connect compatible compressed-air hoses through a partial-turn locking action.
Are all universal claw couplings interchangeable?
No. “Universal” normally indicates compatibility within a defined coupling profile. American, European and Australian types may differ in claw spacing, profile dimensions, gasket design and pressure rating, so they must be verified separately.
What configurations are available?
Common configurations include male-threaded ends, female-threaded ends, hose ends, blank ends and three-way connections. Available configurations may vary between American, European and Australian coupling profiles.
How do I identify the correct coupling profile?
Confirm the regional type, claw distance, claw geometry, gasket dimensions, nominal size and mating coupling. Existing part numbers, drawings, samples and clear photographs can also support identification.
What thread standards are available?
Threaded claw couplings may be supplied with NPT, BSPP, BSPT and selected metric threads. Thread diameter, pitch, taper and sealing method must be confirmed because similar-looking threads are not necessarily interchangeable.
How should a hose-end claw coupling be selected?
Confirm the hose inside diameter, hose construction, stem dimensions, working pressure and required retention method. Hose size alone does not confirm that the coupling and hose form an approved assembly.
What materials and surface finishes are available?
Selected claw couplings may be supplied in carbon steel, cast iron, stainless steel or brass, with applicable zinc-plated or other specified finishes. Availability depends on the coupling profile, configuration and operating requirements.
How should the gasket material be selected?
Gasket material should be selected according to the operating medium, temperature and environmental exposure. NBR, EPDM and selected fluoroelastomer options may be evaluated, subject to the coupling design and application requirements.
What safety accessories are required?
Selected claw couplings use safety clips or locking pins to reduce unintended separation. Hose restraints or whip checks may also be required according to the hose assembly, pressure and workplace safety procedure; always depressurize the system before disconnecting.
